Wikipedia Has Banned Scientology's More Vocal Friends and Foes

I guess I would be in a good position to edit Wikipedia articles on the basis that I am somewhere on the middle ground, except that I never got the time to get into that, and now with their banning of both sides I really don't feel like working on it at all.

I find Wikipedia stance outrageous and unbearable. It will probably change nothing to the situation. How will they control who edit what? It will only shed a bad light on them and the suspicions that their article are not balanced after all, plus it clearly is an infringement on free speech and as such is frankly objectionable and a real shame.

Hopefully they'll realize they are on the wrong path and lift this shameful and stupid ban.

The Associated Press: Religion news in brief

Carrie Prejean Fired

I was supportive of Carrie Prejean for her right to express her opinion in the contest and not be penalized for it. However, when I watched on YT a press conference she gave, it was not just an opinion anymore, it was outright campaigning. I found it out of place. I don't have time to follow all this in details but based on that impression, I suspect Trump took the right decision again.

I usually like to have pretty babes pics on my blog but every time I see her picture I am reminded of her campaigning and that removes the attraction. Plus anyway I find her plastic with no real sex appeal.

Negative Reviews Bring Trust

To allow for negative reviews is important even for commercial products. At one points there were two web sites for Symbian softwares, One was Handango and the other was something like Symbian.com. The later allowed for negative reviews while the former only allowed positive ones. Because of this, I could not trust Handango and ended up buying always from Symbian.com. Sadly, it seems Handango bought Symbian.com :-( I guess in spite of their dishonesty they may have been better commercial managers. The good people don't always win... Nevertheless, the truth of this facts remain...

The story below reminds me of Handango, and I hope they won't go the same way.

Slashdot | Restauranteurs Say Yelp Uses Extortion To Ply Ad Sales:
"Readers Mike Van Pelt and EricThegreen point out a story in the East Bay Express alleging that online restaurant review site Yelp is doing more than providing a nice interface for foodies to share their impressions of restaurants. Instead, says the article, representatives from the site have called restaurants in the Bay area to solicit advertising, but with an interesting twist: the ad sales reps let restaurant owners know that, if they buy advertising at around $300 a month, Yelp can 'do something' about prominently displayed negative reviews of their restaurants. If the claims are true, it sure lowers my opinion of Yelp, which I'd thought of as one of the good guys (and a useful site). I wonder how many other online review sites might be doing something similar."

Apple iPhone Police Censor South Park

Apple blocked the creators of South Park because its iPhone app was potentially offensive.

Apple iPhone police censor South Park • The Register:
"Apple has blocked the creators of South Park from selling an iPhone app based on the long-running cartoon series.

According to a BoingBoing post, the blog site's 'friends at South Park' said that 'We first announced our iPhone App back in October, after we submitted the Application to Apple for approval. After a couple of attempts to get the application approved, we are sad to say that our app has been rejected.'

The reason? The content was 'potentially offensive.'"

Weak Excuses for Moderation of Discussion Forums

Spam and "trolls" are very easy to deal with in an unmoderated forum, and at least it is left to the individual to decide what he considers spam and troll, and not for someone to decide it for them and make decisions that affect the whole group, something that actually is often abused to suppress viewpoints they don't like. In this sense I agree with Andrew Robertson below.

These moderated forums like ESMB, MBCB, XSO or WHYWEPROTEST show the very cultic side of the Scientology haters - alt.religion.scientology | Google Groups

I disagree, Barbara. ARS is an example of an unmonitored forum - do you honestly think it is better, with all its antipsych spam and trolling, an environment for the discussion of CoS?
-unquote-

In my view this newsgroup is a much more interesting forum for discussion of Scientology than any of the nannyish message boards of dubious longevity.

Spammers and trolls? They're at an all time low on a.r.s at present and were always easy to handle.

But, I suppose it's a matter of personal choice. Some prefer the genteel up-market bar with no dust on the skirting boards, the friendly bar tender and the smartly dressed clientèle, whilst others feel more at home in the tavern down by the docks with sawdust on the floor, where a wrong word will get you a punch in the head. But in the a.r.s.tavern you can punch them back with no fear of being thrown out.

Anti-psych ARS Spam Mostly Dead

There's been some message from an ex-bot anti-psychiatry poster recently in ARS to the effect she realized the wrong she was doing. If just the Trudy bot is left to spam ARS, the message may have been a genuine one.

PS - note how the "circle jerks" page referenced below mixes actual spammers with dissenters to the critics cause.

Anti-psych circlejerk mostly dead - alt.religion.scientology | Google Groups:
"After eight years or so, it looks like they've faded away, leaving the
Trudybot talking to itself.

http://home.primus.ca/~ronsharp/circlejerk.html

They used to have four or five identities at any one time replying to each
other, now down to one robot poster."

Critical Fora and Free Speech

I don't usually agree with Barbara Schwarz on many things but I think she has a point when it comes to supposedly open critical fora. In my opinion, people like Andreas Heldal-Lund and Emma have failed to abide by their own free speech claims (and of course the WhyWeProtest and the IRC channel jokes).

ARS is currently the only forum that can be said to be truly free-speech abiding, and that's because it simply is impossible for anybody to enforce any rules there apart for mathematically determined spam. It also is the only critical forum where actual discussion is possible, and really the only forum worth reading for that reason alone.

I have to agree with Barbara here - spam and odd behavior is just the price to pay for free speech, and in that ARS is way better than any of the critical fora.

More Banning on the Part of Shallonymous

There is a discussion going on on a board called "Freethought and Rationalist" discussing the reports that Amnesty International is looking into allegation of "Human Trafficking" in Scientology. AI will probably eventually reject these claims for the ridiculous assertions they are, so that's not really newsworthy at this stage.

However, I found more interesting the fact that there is a poster on this board, named "whichphilosophy", a veteran member who has already made 6,870 posts and counting, and who comes up with very good arguments. He seems to be a moderate Scientologist. In one of his posts he writes:

Amnesty International to investigate Scientology? - Page 2 - FRDB:
"Say what you like it's a liberal board. Besides when I answer Anonymous forums presenting facts such as actual court documents or affidavits I am soon blocked from posting (often on the 3rd time). Here people are not so fanatical in their beliefs though really all they have to rely on are what they see on the internet."
Not sure that this really happened but I would not be surprised, knowing Shallonymous cultishness and the hypocrisy of critics regarding "free speech".

This is further illustrated through a recent PR news report, written by Shallonymous themselves (since the press in general just ignores them, including for their "one year anniversary"), in which they boast about various events which they attribute to themselves (just like they did in their Dec. 8 propaganda video), and in which one of their boasts is:
"4) German government extend official invitation to Anonymous. German authorities organised a conference last September in Hamburg entitled "What is Scientology?" and extended an official invitation to Anonymous to attend. Scientology representative Tommy Davis was denied access on the grounds that "If you discuss the dangers of illegal drugs, you do not invite the drug dealer to speak on stage"
This is typical of critics' justification to prevent free speech: first label accordingly, then you do not need to feel guilty about banning the representation of opposed viewpoints. Never mind the fact that the title of this conference was "What is Scientology"? So you would not want a Scientology representative to give his view or defend Scientology against accusations, right?

Note - About this invitation see my posts of Aug 3, 2008 and Feb 10.

Jason Beghe Message to Anonymous - Grow Up!

New York - Jason Beghe to Anonymous: Grow Up - Runnin' Scared - Village Voice: "Since that game is over, they ought to create a new one."

I wrote earlier that I partly agree with Beghe when he advises Anonymous to drop their masks, but I also agree with him when he says: "Since that game is over, they ought to create a new one", and I think this new game is a deeper and more mature look into Scientology. I have been saying this for months already.

However, I still do not see that taking place. Quite on the contrary I continue to be aghast at the shallowness and cultishness of Anonymous. The last example, apart for the pubes, of course, is this one:

"Scientologists Targeting HIV-Positive Protesters" - Story spreading

And here we go!

Scientology Accused of Singling out HIV+ Protesters :: EDGE Boston
Scientologists Targeting HIV-Positive Protesters / Queerty
Scientology lobbying to restrict rights of HIV+ — Bearnaked Joe’s
$cientology’s unethical practices on its dissidents | inlandutopia.com

And some Scilon Spin-control

Another Look at Scientology: HIV+ Rumor Only a Rumor

In the blog entry referred to in this message above, I agreed that "If the CoS really obtained information from their private health records and were using this against them it would indeed be outrageous." but I questioned whether this has in effect been happening, and I cautioned against spreading a story based on rumors only.

What does Anonymous do? They call my blog entry "Scilon Spin-control" and then set out to spread the story without even having all the facts.

That's the kind of immature, childish, and cultish behavior I am talking about. They just don't care for the truth, as long as it makes Scientology look bad.

I thus fully concur with Beghe's message: Anonymous: Grow Up! If you can't switch to the higher gear, you will forever remain... anonymous.

More Proof of Magoo Censorship

It happened again. One "gaxeviw" posted four messages in the comments section of Magoo's channel. These were not spam, not offensive, just three direct addresses to comments posted by other posters, and pointing to the discrepancy between what she says and her affidavit. Here is a screen shot after the first three messages (click on the picture for a bigger rendition):

Try to find these messages now. She just deleted them!

The fourth message, that was only dealing with some question about religion and not pointing to the discrepancy between Magoo's current claim and her affidavit, is still there. This is how it looks now:
The order is slightly different because, apparently, Youtube reorganizes the comments after a while, putting replies under the posts that were replied to, rather than concentrating on top. Or maybe this is not done automatically, I don't know. You can see on this picture that the comment of gaxeviw, the fourth one that did not point to magoo's inconsistencies, is still there, now as a reply to the message that was addressed. However, the three other messages are not there anymore. They have been deleted by "free speech" Magoo.

See below an example of Youtube (automatic) reorganization. The Magoo comment you see in the first picture, which was the last message in replies she made to herself, is now indeed below the message she replied to, on the last position:

You may think that they are now under the messages that were replied to rather than at the top, but it is not the case. You can make a search on the string from the original message replied to, and you will find the message without gaxeviw reply underneath. Check it out.
Messages by one "FreedomDignity", who also questioned her on that subject, were not deleted, but those from gaxeviw were, as where those by two previous accounts, which she also blocked from posting again, just like she banned gaxeviw too.

Remember this the next time you'll see Magoo carrying her "CoS is against free speech" sign!

Scott Pilutik Not a Free Speech Activist

Breaking: Scientology international headquarters seeks ban on HIV+ protesters : Indybay: "Constitutional free speech and church-state religious issues have caught the attention of the respected UCLA professor Eugene Volokh of the Volokh Conspiracy and Scientology critic and attorney Scott Pilutik."

This may look like constitutional free speech religious issues have only recently caught the attention of some sort of independent established attorney, Scott Pilutik, that in addition is associated in the same paragraph as a "respected UCLA professor".

In fact, Pilutk is a veteran anti-Scientologist who was still a student at law not long time ago and. to my knowledge, was a biased Scientology critic long before he even started studying law.

Since he supported the Kady O'Malley and Rob Clark driven ban against me on their pet IRC channel, whatever he would write about "free speech" does not have much credibility in my eyes.

Anonymous Pulls CoS Book Out of Shop

UN is selling Co$-PR. UPDATE: LOL NOT ANYMORE (at least online) - Why We Protest | Activism Forum

Anonymous found out that the UN shop was selling what is probably a CoS front group book, "Youth for Human Right" . Flood of calls and email to put it down, which the UN does, at least online.

My question is- isn't that a free speech abuse?

What would be the reason to ask then to put it down?

Everybody on WWP of course automatically agrees that this is bad bad bad, but I have not seen what is the argument for it.

If a Christian group publishes a book dealing with Human Rights, should it be banned too?

The UN shop website has in fact very few items.

One of it is entitled "1001 Inventions: Muslim Heritage in Our World".

Is it OK for this book to be sold and not the Human Right one of the CoS? Why?

What about if the Muslim book would be called "1001 Inventions: L. Ron Hubbard Heritage in Our World"?

What if another book they sell, "Doing Business 2008" was published by Wise, another CoS front group? Would it be reason enough to make a scandal and ask the UN shop to pull it out right away?

I am only pondering...

Censorship at WhyWeProtest.net?

You will remember that, among many other things, enturbulation.org admins were involved in editing posts against the knowledge and consent of the posters, and that they also had an SP list of people towards whom they would run a "miserable user" script.

Now I find something fishy at WhyWeProtest.net too.

Some time ago, a poster there made a post asking if anybody knew about the high ranking ex-member who let a commentary on my blog, and which I blogged about here.

The URL for that post used to be "http://forums.whyweprotest.net/15-media/high-ranking-defector-speaks-out-36057/"

However, if you now click on that URl, you will get to another post.

The original post can still be found with a different URL:

The claim made in the original post, that "It's a repost of Ask the Scientologist: Scientology's Leader, Miscavige, Is a Failure from August 2nd. " is false. These are two different posts, even if the style is similar.

Apparently, the two threads were "merged", whatever this means.

A poster pointed quite rightly :"This is a new story/blog and has nothing to do with the OP of the thread it was merged with. Unmerge plox? "

But the admin disagrees: "Disregard plox. Thread was reported for merging, didn't read it thoroughly but the OPs are similar. Unmerged."

I too found the post of August 2 and mentioned it in my post, but Thoughful, the author of the comment, claimed the post he made as a comment on my blog in December was the first one.

Even if the August 2 post was from him also, why merge the two just because they are similar? Why prevent people from reading the second one and redirect to the first one instead?

It's illogical, and it also is a form of censorship. They are preventing people to read the two posts, that, even though the style is similar, contain different information.

Critics are also notorious for not liking to link to my web site, and this may also be a further form of disguised censorship.

There is no reason to "merge" the two posts just because the style is similar, especially since this is not a merge but simply redirecting the original URL to the other post.

Anonymous should really "unmerge" them.

Magoo Censorship

The following message was posted on Magoo's youtube page:
Tory Christman claims that she was ordered off her seizure medication by the CoS but she forgets to say that such illegal orders were promptly overturned by higher CoS authorities, and that for the 30 years she was in Scientology she was allowed to take her anti-seizure medicine, as confirmed by her 2003 affidavit.

Tory Christman affidavit is the best proof there is that Scientology is not against seizure medicines where needed.

Google "Tory Christman" affidavit 2003
The message was deleted! So it was reposted, with request for Magoo that she comments the allegation. Her "answer" was to delete all such messages and ban the user!

Another poster confirmed that this is what Magoo does:
I too have had my messages either deleted or blocked by Magoo. Seems she only allows those who agree with her to speak.

I'm not a Scientologist but came upon her video, thinking it was one of genuine sympathy.but, instead, found a lecture to John Travolta.

She wrote to me saying that if I'd lost hundreds of friends then I would understand to which I replied on her comment page, that I'd lost enough loved ones to allow me to have empathy with a bereaved father, a quality her video lacks. In fact, thr video comes across as self-serving and pious, a lecture wrapped in the giuse of a sympathy message.. i asked how she expected John Travolta, a grief-stricken parent, to listen to her message, when even I find its timing sickening.

That message was deleted and I can only assume that all future posts were blocked. So much for free speech!

Madona and the British Press

"Madonna, always in fighting shape, has won a round against the British press. The pop star won a judgment Monday against a British tabloid that she accused of breaching her privacy and copyright by publishing pictures of her 2000 wedding."

From http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/magazine/article/505849
If we believe anti-Scientologists that bringing down a leaked video aimed at an internal audience and on which they have the copyright is against "free speech", how about that one? Shall we now see masked protesters roaming around Madonna's mansion?

The Thunderdome

Another way information is manipulated on enturbulation.org, in addition to arbitrary banning, is to send threads to the "Thunderdome", a section on enturbulation.org where anything goes and where the goal of posters is to seriously disturb the mental peace of anybody, using gory pictures and wild accusations. The thunderdome's effect is describe by this French girl who made the mistake to follow her thread in there. It also is the source of the incident that led Tory/Magoo to incite her thug to physically threaten an anon after he had insulted her in the dome.

Not surprisingly, many of the threads and posts that are being sent to the thunderdome, where normal discussion is virtually impossible, are simply threads and subjects anonymous is uncomfortable with (being unable to live by their free speech moto) but which could potentially develop in interesting discussions. This is confirmed by one of the participants:
"Yes, some interesting threads were sent there to die that could actually have engendered some good conversation and, indeed, actually were doing so. Perhaps it was truly the best call as flaming was taking place but thing is, if you don't have the ~right~ POV there, to the TD you will go."
Needless to say, declaring someone a "troll" or "OSA" is a favorite tactic of critics to get rid of dissenters, and in any moderated forum ran by critics this is exactly what happens. Even ARS has its list, that demonstrates how simple dissenters are so labeled. The only difference is that critics cannot apply it since ARS isn't moderated (and is the reason why the most interesting discussions still happens there rather than in moderated fora).

More Censorship at Enturbulation.org

Another arbitrary banning from enturbulation.org, that of "Lily", the ARS posters known for blaming critics for being OSA agents in disguise because they make critics look bad with their bloated criticism.

Unlike the French girl in another case, Lily was clever enough not to let herself divert to the "Thunderdome", but stayed in the thread where discussion was taking place. Anonymous had no other "choice" to silent her than to ban her - in another glorious demonstration for their love of free speech. Even the reason they found to ban her is silly because she took care not to infringe any of the rules. What is more, they even deleted her posts from the thread!

And remember - these are the people who claim that the CoS demanding that a copyrighted and off-topic video of Tom Cruise be put down is an "attempt to crush free speech"!

Surprisingly, or not, even one anon mention that censorship in enturbulation.org does not go unnoticed:
"There have been several critics banned from Enturbulation.org over content posted regarding Noelle North & Subway. Is it fair? No. Is it censorship? Maybe. The folks at Enturbulation have been accused of conducting the same kind of censorship that the Scilons have long conducted on a much larger scale."
